Kennedy the Vampire Slayer is one of my favorite fictional characters. I love the fact that simply by being herself -- something of a spoiled brat -- she plays a key role in saving the world. She's a strong character, with confidence in her own abilities and a clear understanding of exactly who she is as a person. She is open about her sexuality -- she's a lesbian -- and she's equally open about her personality flaws. "This may have escaped your keen notice," she tells Willow. "But I'm kind of a brat."
It's her spoiled rich-girl attitude, and her unwillingness to settle for less than what she wants, that ultimately helps tip the scales for the side of good. Kennedy is a rule breaker, but she also knows when to fall in line. She is successful as a follower as well as a leader, partially because she recognizes her own resentment when she disagrees with those in authority. Asked to play the role of disgruntled minion, she calls upon her own annoyance at being passed over for leadership and does the job well. "I'm method," she explains when her performance is complimented.
Kennedy enters the series as a Potential -- one of hundreds of girls who possesses the qualities that could make her the next vampire slayer, if she's chosen by the mystical forces surrounding the chosen line. How the Watcher's Council identifies potential slayers is unclear -- they missed Buffy and Faith, both of whom were called before meeting their watchers, so one assumes the process isn't foolproof. Kennedy, however, was identified at age eight, and trained with her watcher from that time forward.
As a result of her early training, she is proficient with weapons and is the most skilled fighter among the many potential slayers who come to Sunnydale. She is also the oldest, and is given a position of responsibility in training the rest.
She also develops an immediate attraction to Willow, and pursues her diligently and successfully. Her genuine caring for the other woman gives Willow the necessary self-confidence to carry out her pivotal role in the final battle against the First. "I've always sort of gotten my way, so you're going to make it through this no matter how dark it gets. Because now, you're my way."
As a result of the spell Willow casts, Kennedy becomes the first new slayer -- granted only by seconds -- as the forces surrounding the chosen line are rearranged, changing the rules forever.
